CAMP SNYDER MAPPING

LASR @ AACC strike team visited Camp Snyder in VA to conduct environmental science. They collected data from the use of drones to generate 3D maps of the landscape for storm water runoff analysis.

The team tested two new drones for operational & safety standards (Phantom 4 RTK & Mavic 2 Pro). The release of the DJI Mavic 2 Pro created a large stir of excitement amongst drone pilots. The increased camera quality achieved through the new one inch sensor made a notable difference in comparison to its predecessor. The new design for Mavic props increases flight time and decreases noise pollution. The addition of upward facing top mounted sensors gives the Mavic superior obstacle avoidance.

The elevation and plant health maps we created gave us strong insight into the environmental issues that Camp Snyder deals with on a annual basis. The data collection process taught us a lot about consistency, accuracy, and the methods for conducting safe drone operations in less than ideal circumstances.
